MY STORY
Journey of harshit verma
Harshit Verma, born in Hoshiarpur, Punjab, and now based in Mumbai, is a vocalist whose journey into Indian classical music is a story of discovery, surrender, and devotion.
From childhood, Harshit had a natural connection with sound. He would often hum and rhyme instinctively. His voice stood out — deep, expressive, and full of potential. His father recognized this early on and would often say, “You should learn Indian classical music. Your voice has something special.”
But back then, Harshit had a different dream: he wanted to become a pilot. He was focused on academics and excelled in school. He participated in plays and school events, and was known among classmates for his singing — but he never saw music as a career. When his father would again suggest classical training, Harshit would respond with hesitation, thinking classical music meant just bhajans, not yet understanding the depth and richness of the tradition.
A Return to the Mountains
About a year later, Harshit returned to Dharamshala for his family’s business. There, he met many independent musicians and began jamming, learning, and absorbing music more deeply. One day, he attended a jam session where a vocalist was performing Indian classical ragas in a fusion format with international musicians. The sound was mesmerizing — rooted, yet contemporary.
That singer was Rahul Mishra, a disciple of Padma Vibhushan Girija Devi ji of the Benaras Gharana.
Harshit approached him and asked to learn. Rahul ji agreed: “Come to my place tomorrow.” That night, Harshit couldn’t sleep from excitement.
